Huntley Historic Site Restoration and Adaptive Re-Use

Alexandria, VA

SWSG performed historic research, evaluated existing conditions of the buildings and grounds, and prepared an opinion of probable cost for recommended treatments for this historic property. SWSG also  prepared plans to restore the main house and outbuildings for use as a historic preservation learning center, providing windows-into-walls while incorporating cutting-edge mechanical and electrical systems. Construction documents for mechanical and plumbing systems at the mansion house and tenant house/visitor center included a geothermal system with zoned humidity controls. This eliminated the need for historically inappropriate outdoor condensing units.

Purcellville Historic Roller Rink Repair

Purcellville, VA

The design for this historic roller rink received the Loudoun County 2011 Signatures of Loudoun award for Design Excellence. The building was condemned structurally and SWSG was the one firm to develop an  innovative design of a hidden interior cold-formed steel frame to support a new metal roof. The structure was saved and the historical elements of this 100 year old timber frame remained.

The electrical designs included high density LED lighting for the rink and new electrical service. Mechanical-plumbing engineering designed a new underground geothermal system which allowed the removal the HVAC equipment along the outside of the building. This brought the exterior of the building back to its historical setting.
