2008 Award for Innovative Design - Honorable Mention
The Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute presented Ted Welti, PE and SWSG the Honorable Mention 2008 Award for Innovative Design for our cold-formed steel design of the Piatt Place Residences and Mixed Use Commercial.
Project Highlights
Piatt Place
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
SWSG provided the structural engineering for cold-formed steel exterior framing and floors of the Piatt Place in Pittsburgh. Services include plan layout drawings, connection details, header schedules, sill schedules, jamb stud schedules, calculations and site visits during construction.
The original building was a four-story retail structure to which three additional floors were added while converting all seven stories to residential use. The exterior walls of the top three floors are framed with cold-formed steel. The top two floors, penthouse decks accessible by exterior spiral stairs, and roof are also framed with cold-formed steel.
Restored Spindle Sears House Dedicated
Centreville, Virginia
Ordered from the Sears, Roebuck and Company catalogue in January 1934 by Roger and Wilma Spindle, the 1,000 square foot home was restored by the Fairfax County Park Authority with the guidance of SWSG's Historic Preservation Department. The ribbon cutting dedication ceremony was held September 13, 2008 during the annual Centreville Day festival.
A Historic Structure Report, a comprehensive reference document providing restoration and long-term preservation guidance, was prepared by SWSG. The Spindle Sears House, a Sears catalog Brentwood model, has retained almost all of the original fixtures, as evidenced by SWSG's comparison of the house to the Sears ‘33/’34 catalog. Original Sears blueprints, obtained from the daughter of the original owner, influenced the design of necessary missing features in the restoration plans.
Reston Community Center Improvements
Reston, Virginia
SWSG provided nine major improvements designs for Reston Community Center. Full A/E services prepared construction documents for the upgrade of the HVAC system for the entire facility, renovation of the reception and photo lab areas, refurbishment of the locker room, orchestra pit improvements, architectural features in the Natatorium, modification of stage rigging, and replacement of the fire alarm system. SWSG has also provided full construction management/ administration services during the 2008 summer to coordinate the completion of all the designs.
